MALELADE - Georg Baselitz on the occasion of his 85th birthday

MALELADE is both the exhibition title and the work title of the artist's book published by Georg Baselitz in 1990. It contains 148 proofs, many of which the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung is collecting from its own holdings, and which can be used to study the genesis of the original works. Among them are numerous permanent loans from Duke Franz of Bavaria. MALELADE is, according to the artist, a play on words from "idiot language". In the works, too, there are repeated scraps of words that generate large, sometimes paradoxical references.

Georg Baselitz describes himself as a radical-neo-expressive and figurative painter. As a philosopher of painting, he says, he strives to build up the real world with his art.
