Grace Weaver delineates the desires of her generation in our uncertain present. Everyday observations encounter subtle self-reflection, precise drawings coalesce with luxuriating chromaticity in her paintings and works on paper. Instead of grand settings, Weaver’s watercolors focus on a whole range of individual figures. On intimate monumentality that seems almost palpable. She captures these individual moods in the fluidly radiant color in a surprisingly accurate way. Her figures can easily dissolve into grief, poise pensively, or joyfully achieve distinct form. Painted wet-on-wet, as a visual element, chance generates unknown forms and color gradients that consistently expand Weaver’s repertoire of expression. Her watercolors resemble diary-like notes. Paintings in the “present continuous,” paintings of a present that is occurring just now with an open end.
